Balefire is an extremely energetic substance of unknown composition. It can be produced directly by the breeding of flashgold, consisting of gold-198 imbued with antimatter, despite sharing no similarities with normal matter. Balefire comes in various esoteric forms, including shards, eggs, ashes, and a "gas". It is obscenely radioactive and pyrophoric, but also serves as a potent energy source.

Production

The easiest way to obtain a Balefire shard is to defuse and deconstruct a dud. Doing so will drop shards, which are virulently radioactive and will instantly kill you if unprotected.

Alternatively, you can "milk" a dud using the magnetic extractor. This produces antimatter and gaseous balefire cells (you need empty cells in your inventory), with antimatter cells being more likely than it. This method is arguably riskier as there is a small chance for the dud to explode per use, but yields much more balefire overall.

Gaseous balefire cells are merged together a crafting table to create a shard, like ingots to a block. These emit 50 RAD/s each.

This recipe is shapeless; the inputs may be placed in any arrangement in the crafting grid.

The main way is to produce thermonuclear ashes, acquired by recycling flashgold RBMK fuel. Alternatively, thermonuclear ashes can be produced sustainably as a byproduct from antimatter - BF rocket fuel.

Uses

Due to its incredible energy potential, it has a variety of uses.

BF Rocket fuel.

Balefire and Steel

Its own specialized bomb (called Balefire bomb), presumably a modern version of a Dud.

Shards provide 15 to the Custom Nuke's antimatter stage with Eggs providing 150.

Eggs can even be put into a bowl and scrambled for consumption. Add some "ham" while you're at it. "I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam-I-Am." (Dr. Seuss)

Trivia

  • Balefire originates from the fanfiction Fallout: Equestria.
    • Contrary to popular belief, balefire is not horse magic. Balefire is canonically a megaspell - a framework used to augment the effect of regular spells - developed by the zebras, as ponies do not mix their magic into physical forms. It is described as a "bottled, necromancy-enhanced dragon's breath". Balefire in NTM, on the other hand, is produced by the mundane materials gold-198 and antimatter.
    • The egg actually represents the base magic used for the much more powerful balefire bombs that devastated Equestria; the bomb itself is a megaspell talisman, produced from the egg. It is significantly smaller than NTM's version, being small enough to conceal and transport.
  • Gaseous balefire cells are not actually gaseous: instead, it is a colloid consisting of microscopic balefire particulate suspended in a noble gas. It is much safer to work with than pure balefire. The radiation produced by the balefire keeps it suspended, as the ionized gas forms "bubbles" around each particle that prevents it from aggregating.
  • Some of balefire's properties are described by Mae Porter, a theoretical physicist. Originally named "SWIRLMAT", balefire seems to indefinitely radiate energy and explodes from shocks, such as an electrical pulse or annihilation with antimatter. Porter describes its visual appearance as a "literal mass of swirling colors, with darker lines permeating through [its] neon green surface".
  • Curiously, shards only stack to 16 and eggs cannot stack at all.
  • A literal fire also simply called "balefire" is created in the wake of balefire detonations. It is also green, cannot be put out easily, and gives the contaminated status effect. The easiest way to control the spread of balefire is to use a foam fire extinguisher, as it cannot be extinguished using water.
