Plutonium-240 is a common and somewhat disappointing plutonium isotope, as it isn't very useful in itself.
Production
It can be bred from Pu-239, but it is usually an indirect byproduct from the production of Pu-239.
Uses
Moderate role in plutonium fuel in the form of reactor grade plutonium.
Breeds into nuclear waste.
It can be used to breed Pu-241 if it absorbs a neutron without fissioning.
Can be used in the Custom Nuke. It contributes a 1.05 multiplier to its salted stage.
Trivia
- It has a high spontaneous fissile rate, which causes premature fission preventing nuclear chain reaction necessary for weapons, thus it must be kept at a minimum when in a nuclear warhead.
- Technically, the spontaneous fission rate is lower than that of U-238, but Pu-240 has a far lower half-life.
- It normally forms from the neutron capture and subsequent failure to fission of Pu-239.
- Used to breed into lead, but now it breeds into waste.
