Plutonium-239 is the most important plutonium isotope as it is one of the best radioisotopes to be used in nuclear weapons and fuel.
Production
It is a neutron capture product of uranium-238 in nuclear reactors. However, it is often found with Pu-240, which can be a detriment if you require pure Pu-239, which is common if you wish to make nuclear weapons or very high strength fuels.
Uses
- Plutonium and MOX Fuel.
- All (thermo)nuclear weapons and nukes utilizing a plutonium core, which also includes almost all modern warheads.
- Mini-Nuke weapons (only use nuggets!).
- Breeds into Pu-240, which is a disappointing isotope.
- It can be used in the Custom Nuke. It contributes an impressive 25 to its nuclear stage.
Trivia
- It is used more in nuclear weapons than U-235 not only because of its higher energy output, but because of its far smaller critical mass and ease of production.
- However, it actually has a slightly lower chance of fission when absorbing a neutron.
