The Lever Action Shotgun (aka "Mare's Leg") is the earliest available shotgun. It uses 12 gauge shells, dealing decent damage for a low-tier weapon.

Mechanics and Play
Being a shotgun, most ammo types have considerable spread, however due to being a full-length rifle, the lever action shotgun has no innate spread, meaning that slugs are perfectly accurate when using "sights" (the gun doesn't have proper sights, instead the view just follows the barrel), and all buckshot types have minimal spread, compared to sawed-off guns.
The lever action shotgun has an ammo capacity of just six shells, and reloads are not very fast, due it it being reloaded one shell at a time. However it more than makes up for it by how much damage it can dish out at close range, with one shot being almost enough to kill most vanilla mobs, should all projectiles hit.
As with all guns that are reloaded round by round, hitting the fire key will cancel the reload, allowing the gun to be used sooner.

The Lever Action Shotguns are the B-side of the standard lever action shotgun, essentially being two sawed-off guns being dual-wielded. The stats are largely the same, except the spread being noticeably higher due to the shorter barrel, as well as the draw animation being twice as fast (0.25s instead of 0.5s). As with all dual-wielded weapons, they cannot use sights, to counteract this, they have no hipfire penalty, meaning they are always as accurate as they would have been when using sights.
Despite the worse accuracy, the gun still benefits from the fact that it's just two shotguns that can be used simultaneously, making the effective fire rate twice as fast, while the reload duration stays the same due to both guns being reloaded at the same time.
The lever action shotguns have a unique repeating animation, where the entire gun is flipped around in order to cock the lever.
Crafting the Lever Action Shotguns

Mods
- Choke: The full-length lever action shotgun can be fitted with a choke, halving spread on buckshot-type ammo variants and extending the effective range. The choke cannot be installed if the barrel has been sawed off.
- Hacksaw: The full-length lever action shotgun can have its barrel and stock sawed off, halving the draw duration from 0.5s to 0.25s and increasing damage by 35%, while increasing projectile spread by 50% and adding a small amount of innate spread. Sawing the barrel off will rename the lever action shotgun to "Mare's Leg". The cocking animation is also replaced by a "shotgun flip" style animation.
The dual-wielded lever action shotguns cannot take these mods, as they are already sawed off. Their stats however are a little bit different, they have the same base damage as the standard lever action shotgun, not benefiting from the +35% damage increase, however they have only +35% projectile spread instead of +50%. Furthermore, they have no innate spread, making slugs pin-point accurate, and due to not having usable sights, they have no hipfire penalty either.
Trivia
- The "shotgun flip" performed with sawed-off lever action guns is a reference to the same technique seen in Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
- Flipping a gun like this usually involves the barrel briefly pointing directly at the user, therefore it's not recommended to imitate this move.
