SPAS-12
"Here, I have a more suitable gun for you. You'll need it - Catch!"
The Franchi SPAS-12 is a 12 gauge, pump-action, combat shotgun with a 8 round tube magazine. The default round is the standard 12 gauge shell. It has no ability to use iron sights.
Background
From Wikipedia:
The Franchi SPAS-12 is a combat shotgun manufactured by Italian firearms company Franchi from 1979 to 2000. The SPAS-12 is a dual-mode shotgun, adjustable for semi-automatic or pump-action operation. The SPAS-12 was sold to military and police users worldwide, as well as on the civilian market.
Mechanics and Play
The SPAS-12 plays similarly to its appearance in the Half-Life series, but the pellet spread is tighter, so effectiveness persists into medium range. This combined with the headshot multiplier the shells have means that most generic vanilla monsters are killed in a single shot, sometimes even when armored. Also in line with the Half-Life series, it has no ability to enable its semi-automatic mode and it is strictly pump action. However, the inherited ability to fire 2 rounds at once at the cost of a longer recovery time, is an alternative to this fire mode.
There is no ability to use iron sights to assist with aiming. However, with the range this gun should be used at, this is not a serious issue, as the crosshair is an acceptable means of aiming, and vaguely illustrates the spread.
It has a durability of 2,500, which is average and gives it an estimated lifespan of 250 rounds, assuming only the default round is used and no maintenance at all occurs. This is not spectacularly high, so if one is planning to go without the ability to maintain the weapon for prolonged periods of combat, it is recommended to only use it intermittently, as relying on it too much may reduce its lifespan too quickly.
Trivia
- The model was made by Pheo.
- It the first gun to make use of the new COLLADA animation loader.
- Despite being a real gun, the manufacturer is credited to the Black Mesa Research Facility instead of Franchi, possibly because the latter discontinued production in 2000.
- The reason the gun doesn't have a semi-automatic fire mode in Half-Life 1 was possibly due to balance reasons.
- Curiously, the HECU that also sometimes use SPAS-12s, do use the semi-automatic mode against the player.
- All sounds were sourced from Half-Life 1.
- The quote in the comment is from Half-Life 2, where Father Grigori gives the the player their first shotgun, a SPAS-12.
- There is currently a bug where the alternate fire only spawns a single spent shell.
