The Grease Gun is the first available rapid fire weapon. It's a submachine gun that uses cheap 9mm rounds.
Recipe
The grease gun is made almost entirely out of steel, making it a cheap weapon for earlygame:

Mechanics and Play
The grease gun is the first automatic weapon available, and therefore has relatively poor damage and fire rate. However, the low rate of fire has the advantage of giving it very little recoil, and the low power 9mm cartridges are quite cheap.
The gun reloads fairly quickly and holds 30 rounds per magazine, which takes six seconds of sustained fire to deplete. The gun does however draw slower than most guns of similar size, as the stock has to be extended first.
The grease gun is only really suitable for short ranges, as it has significant innate inaccuracy, meaning that even when using sights, shots are still off by quite a bit. Hip-firing the grease gun makes it inaccurate to the point where even at a distance of 20 meters, a significant amount of shots miss. This becomes even more of a problem at lower durability, as a broken gun will often have bullets leave the barrel at a 45° angle.
All in all the grease gun is not great, but it is indeed a significant step up compared to bow and arrow or the pepperbox. Its main saving grace it its price tag: It's one of the cheapest guns firing one of the cheapest ammo types, and it is often times found in structures or supply crates.
Trivia
- The grease gun is based on the M3A1 Grease Gun, a WW2 era submachine gun chambered in .45 ACP, with some 9x19mm versions existing.
- Its name comes from the fact that because of its simple cylindrical full-metal body, it looks like a grease gun. Another name for it is "cake decorator".
- The inspect animation has the player jolt the gun, causing the small lid to close, and then open again. The lid is in fact the gun's safety, as closing it will cause the bolt to lock.
- Despite the model having separate meshes for the bullet and bolt, allowing them to be animated, the gun has no such animations due to the inside of the ejection port not being visible.
- The model depicted is one of the first models of the M3A1. Other variants omit the cocking lever, requiring the user to reach their finger into the ejection port to pull back the bolt, and certain later variants and reproduction models had a more traditional cocking handle going along the side of the gun.
- The gun's design had a huge impact on all subsequent gun designs. It was one of the first guns in the great gun update to receive its texture, and due to the large cylindrical and basically featureless receiver, the decision was made to "paint on" the sheen onto the bare metal, a practice that can be found on almost all subsequent guns. The .44 revolvers for example were made much earlier, and they do not feature the lighting as part of the texture, giving them a less shiny, matte, almost plastic-like appearance.
