Atlas
The RI No. 2 Mark 1 (aka Atlas) is a single action, 6 shot, .357 Magnum revolver. The default round is the pure steel .357 round. It is effectively semi-automatic.
Background
From the BioShock wiki:
The Pistol is a weapon that the player can use in BioShock and BioShock 2 Multiplayer. Pistols have a good rate of fire, good range and accuracy, and deal a moderate amount of damage.
Mechanics and Play
The .357 Magnum is a powerful accurate cartridge and when paired with the Atlas' headshot multiplier, makes it quite potent against all foes. Even without a headshot, it can kill any generic vanilla monster in 1 - 2 shots. It also has access to desh rounds, which increases the damage range to 30 - 33, which is a near guarantee of a one shot on most unarmored targets.
It has no scope or iron sights, but given the typical engagement range with this weapon, this this acceptable. Though it is still possible to snipe targets if one aims well, given the accuracy of the rounds and headshot multiplier.
It has an excellent estimated lifespan of 10,000 rounds, assuming only the default round is used and no maintenance at all occurs. This high reliability allows for it to be used for prolonged periods without maintenance, even under heavy usage.
Trivia
- It features a somewhat unusual reload animation where the gun is disassembled and its cylinder removed entirely, though it is still entirely reasonable to do this for a fast reload with a single action revolver.
- It was the first gun to feature smoke coming from the barrel after firing and full animations.
- The gun resembles the starting pistol (simply named "Pistol") from BioShock 1. Chambered in the (comparatively) common .38 caliber and being able to kill most Splicers with a single shot, it's a powerful early-game weapon.
- The Pistol itself is strongly based on the Webley Revolver, with the barrel's shape and the gun's frame being the most obvious similarities. While the Webley is also a break-action revolver, it is not reloaded by replacing the entire cylinder, instead rounds are simply ejected.
