The Tesla Cannon is a handheld energy cannon, specifically designed as an anti-tank weapon [1]. It originates from the Fallout series. It is locked behind technetium-99 in progression.

Background

From The independent Fallout wiki:

The Tesla Cannon was designed by the U.S. Government, as a sister project to Poseidon Energy's Solar Cannon and served as a lightweight, anti-tank energy weapon. The cover of Future Weapons Today mentions them being "light and compact". During the conflict between the Brotherhood and the Enclave in the Capital Wasteland, Brotherhood scribes worked to build their own Tesla Cannons utilizing a Tesla Coil to more effectively counter the Enclave's vertibirds.

Crafting

It is crafted with three superconductor coils, two heavy cadmium/technetium steel barrels, one heavy cadmium/technetium receiver, one weapon steel mechanism, bakelite/polymer grip, and a single military grade circuit board.

Mechanics and Play

The first energy weapon possible to make, locked behind a mere 21 ingots of technetium steel and a weapon steel mechanism. The large range (about 110 blocks), hitscan laser, high damage, lack of spread and additional explosion make it a very powerful weapon. It is only held up by its lacking scope and complete lack of armor penetration. The capacitors themselves are, while not cheap, very easy to automate, requiring only a few silicon billets and two bars of bakelite/polymer. With a crude oil processing plant and an electric arc furnace, the ammo can be automatically assembled in mass amounts.

It has iron sights which set the FOV to 0.75. Unfortunately, the "sight" is just a metal square with a single dot, making long range aiming difficult, and making this weapon less optimal as a sniper.

The (overcharged capacitors) make both the weapon's laser and explosion 1.5 more powerful, and deal even more damage than the arguably more advanced laser rifle.

Ammo

Capacitor
Name Damage Multiplier Special Effects
Capacitor (Standard)1 x1 Laser damage
Capacitor (Overcharge)1 x1 Laser damage, penetrating
Capacitor (Low Wavelength)1 x1 Fire damage, 10s afterburn
Capacitor (Standard)2 x1 Electric damage, splash damage in a 2 block radius
Capacitor (Overcharge)2 x1.5 Electric damage, splash damage in a 2 block radius
Capacitor (Low Wavelength)2 x0.8 Electric damage, non-penetrating, fires arcs at nearby entities in a 20 block radius on direct hit, arcs deal half damage

Trivia

  • There is a bunch of unused textures for the model, including a skull graffiti and some numbers.
  • Until version X5320, it was the only energy weapon that could not use low-wavelength capacitors. It is now capable to use them, although instead of making shots incendiary, LWCs cause the tesla cannon's beams to split when hitting an entity.
  • The frying sound effect is reused from the UFO boss.
  • Because of how the damage is applied, sometimes only the laser connect, dealing a fraction of the damage it should. This is most apparent with big enemies, like Mask man. This is because while the first instinct of the player may be to fire at the chest or head of an enemy, that will cause the laser to penetrate, and the explosion that deals most of the damage will not hit.
