Crude Oil

Petroleum, also known as crude oil or simply oil, is a naturally occuring yellow-ish black liquid mixture of mainly hydrocarbons, and is found in geological formations. The name petroleum covers both naturally occurring unprocessed crude oil and petroleum products that consist of refined crude oil.

Petroleum is primarily recovered by oil drilling. Drilling is carried out after studies of structural geology, sedimentary basin analysis, and reservoir characterisation. Unconventional reserves such as oil sands and oil shale exist.

Once extracted, oil is refined and separated, most easily by distillation, into innumerable products for direct use or use in manufacturing. Products include fuels such as petrol (gasoline), diesel, kerosene and jet fuel; asphalt and lubricants; chemical reagents used to make plastics; solvents, textiles, refrigerants, paint, synthetic rubber, fertilizers, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and thousands of others.

In Nuclear Tech Mod, Crude Oil is a major and important part of the mod progression, allowing the production of the majority of the fluids you will possibly get after the early-game oil stage. This may probably be the most important fluid in the entirety of the mod, as without it, you wouldn't get nowhere in the mod.

It is a black, flammable, viscous and polluting liquid. Providing you 25.0kTU per bucket.

Production

There are many ways you can get Crude Oil, so let's go through all of them:

Crude Oil is mainly extracted from Oil Deposits, blocks located deep underground containing lots of blocks called Oil Deposit, which per block, gives the player 250mB of Crude Oil. These deposits can be found with a Oil Reservoir Detector, a very useful item that when used, detects nearby oil deposits, this item pinpoints the player the exact position of the deposit, unlike the Survey Scanner, a also very usefull item to find not only oil deposits, but also other things like different Bedrock Ores, useful infinite ores that can be extracted through a Large Mining Drill and require different drills/liquids to be extracted. The Survey Scanner doesn't exactly tell you where the deposit is, only a general area of it when scanned.

These oil deposits can be extracted through a Pumpjack, Oil Derrick, or also a Hydraulic Fracking Tower, although it is a better option to place a Oil Derrick, as they extract much more Crude Oil from the deposits, which eventually deplete and turn into Empty Oil Deposit, which is a block that can be mined just like the Oil Deposit, and can be shredded to obtain gravel, just like you can also get 250mB of Crude Oil from a Oil Deposit. Wielding Crude Oil this way also will give you Natural Gas.

As Bedrock Ores were mentioned before, conventionally, there is a Bedrock Oil Deposit, which can only be extracted by the use of a Hydraulic Fracking Tower. These deposits are infinite therefore can't deplete, and they aren't detectable through the use of the Survey Scanner. So these deposits are renewable.

There are also 2 more ways to get Crude Oil unconventionally, those being in a Catalytic Cracking Tower:

Bitumen
1,000mB
Steam
2,000mB
Crude Oil
800mB
Aromatic Hydrocarbons
200mB
Low-Pressure Steam
20mB

And in the Fractioning Tower(s):

Coal Oil
1,000mB
Coal Gasoline
300mB
Crude Oil
700mB

Uses

Crude Oil is used in a few ways, let's see all the machines and processes it can be used in, in details:

In a Vacuum Refinery:

Vacuum Heavy Oil
400mB
Reformate
250mB
Vacuum Light Oil
200mB
Sour Gas
150mB

(Note: The Crude Oil must be pressurized at 2 PU. For this, it must be ran through a Compressor)

In a Catalytic Cracking Tower:

Crude Oil
1,000mB
Steam
2,000mB
Cracked Oil
800mB
Petroleum Gas
200mB
Low-Pressure Steam

In a Hydrotreater:

Liquid Hydrogen
50mB
Crude Oil
1,000mB
Desulfurized Crude Oil
900mB
Sour Gas
150mB

(Note: The Liquid Hydrogen must be pressurized at 1 PU)

In a Industrial Solidification Machine:

And lastly, in a Boiler:

  • 5mB Crude Oil > 5mB Hot Crude Oil

Trivia

Real Life Facts:

Petroleum production can be extremely profitable and was critical to global economic development in the 20th century, with some countries, so-called "oil states", gaining significant economic and international power because of their control of oil production.

Petroleum exploitation can be damaging to the environment and human health. Extraction, refining and burning of petroleum fuels all release large quantities of greenhouse gases, so petroleum is one of the major contributors to climate change. Other negative environmental effects include direct releases, such as oil spills, and as well as air and water pollution at almost all stages of use.
