Oil Derrick & Pumpjack

Oil derrick

The Oil Derrick and Pumpjack are machines that extract crude oil and natural gas from oil deposits that are directly below them. When supplied with power, they will begin to drill downwards until they cannot drill further or reach an oil deposit. Upon reaching a deposit, they will continuously extract oil and gas from it until the deposit is entirely depleted as indicated in the GUI.

The derrick and pumpjack are nearly identical with the pumpjack only differing compared to the derrick in the fact that it consumes 4kHE/s rather than 2kHE/s, has a more expensive recipe, and more efficiently and rapidly extracts oil from deposits with a smaller ratio of natural gas yielded per unit. As well as this, the pumpjack requires materials derived from oil in order to craft, meaning that the derrick must be crafted before the pumpjack.

Caution. If uranium ore or asbestos ore are destroyed when drilling down to a deposit, dangerous gasses will be released on the surface which can poison the player.

GUI and Operation

The GUI for the derrick and pumpjack can be accessed by interacting with the machines at any point and is identical between the two of them minus a difference in title.

1. Power Buffer. Buffer that the machine draws HE from to operate.
2. Battery Slot. Accepts power from valid items placed in its slot.
3. Status Indicator. Will display a green check mark when fully functional and a red exclamation point when there is an error of any sort (no deposit, depleted deposit, no power).
4. Crude Oil Buffer. 64,000mb buffer that crude oil is pushed to when extracted.
5. Crude Oil IO. Pushes crude oil into valid item containers in its topmost slot.
6. Natural Gas Buffer. 64,000mb buffer that natural gas is pushed to when extracted.
7. Natural Gas IO. Pushes natural gas into valid item containers in its topmost slot.
8. Upgrade Slots. Accepts machine upgrades, a list of which can be seen by hovering over the blue square.

Once an oil deposit is found, the derrick or pumpjack should be placed directly above it and then supplied with power. During operation, the derrick will spew oil particles from its topmost point and the pumpjack will begin moving in a pumping motion.

Pumpjack

The two machines have the following differing stats:

Derrick

• Consumes 2kHE/s during operation
• Extracts 500mb of crude oil and a random amount of natural gas between 100 and 500mb in a 2.5 second cycle.
• Depletes a single block of a deposit after extracting a random number of cycles of oil that is on average twice as small compared to the pumpjack.

Pumpjack

• Consumes 4kHE/s during operation
• Extracts 750mb of crude oil and a random amount of natural gas between 50 and 250mb in a 1.25 second cycle.
• Depletes a single block of a deposit after extracting a random number of cycles of oil that is on average twice as large compared to the derrick.

In total, this means that the pumpjack is on average 3x as efficient at extracting oil and 3x as fast at doing so while producing the same amount of natural gas as the derrick. Given that the derrick can be shredded into a fraction of its crafting materials, it is usually best to use it as means to obtain a pumpjack before promptly recycling the derrick.
