Life Support (NTM: Space)

From HBM's Nuclear Tech Wiki

Surviving in the inhospitable environments found in outer space requires either specialized equipment and well sealed armor, or a pressurized environment.

Primary Life Support System (PLSS)

The primary life support system, also known as a PLSS, is the main way of enabling survival on spacewalks and on the surface of other planets and moons. When in an environment where a player can't breathe unassisted, it will automatically activate, draining 1mB of oxygen every half a second, providing over 2 hours of breathable air.

Crafting

A PLSS can be crafted in a crafting table with the following recipe:

Steel Tank

Compatible Armors

The PLSS can be combined with most armors in an armor modification table, the compatible armors are as follows:

  • Steam Suit
  • T45 Power Armor
  • Steel Ranger Armor
  • AJR Power Armor
  • Remnants Power Armor
  • M1TTY Environment Suit
  • HEV Mark IV
  • Fau Armor
  • DNT Nano Suit
  • Trenchmaster Armor

Usage

Once a PLSS has been crafted and fitted to a compatible armor, it must be filled with oxygen. It can be filled by either placing it in the output slot of a tank or barrel filled with oxygen, by standing in front of a refueling station set to oxygen, or by using an oxygen tank while wearing the armor.

An oxygen tank can be crafted with the following recipe:

Steel Plate
Steel Bolt
Universal Fluid Tank: Liquid Oxygen

Air Vent

In order to make an entirely enclosed space safe to breathe within, an air vent can be placed and supplied with a constant stream of oxygen. Air vents will consume 400mB/s of oxygen until a room is fully pressurized at 0.2atm, sufficient for breathing unassisted (only one is necessary, you don't need a full 1atm to survive!).

The room will be fully pressurized once the entire volume of the room is filled, requiring 1mB of oxygen per block. Once the room is pressurized, it will only consume a continuous trickle, consuming 10mB/s of oxygen on average.

In order to enter/leave the pressurized room, it is desirable to create an airlock, so you don't lose an entire base worth of oxygen every time you open the door. All animated NTM doors are considered sealed, which means they can be used to create an airlock. Vanilla doors will not work to seal rooms!

Air breathing machines will operate as expected within a pressurized room, however, note that they will increase oxygen consumption of the air vent, and with a high enough load will decrease the total pressure of the room, so be careful with those 10mB/t fluid burners!

Regenerating Oxygen

Currently, the only fully regenerative loop of oxygen within the mod is only available to orbital stations. This is due to the specialized algae films involved in the process only being able to hold their shape in microgravity (see: orbit)

In order to capture the CO2 produced by air breathing machines or the regular trickle rate, a CO2 scrubber will be required, which is crafted like so:

CO2 Scrubber

The CO2 produced by this machine can then be piped into a microgravity algae film, which is crafted with saltleaf from Laythe like so:

Microgravity Algae Film

This will produce oxygen, which can be piped back into the air vent for a continuous loop. Note that air lost from airlock cycling will not be recovered.
