Pollution is a mechanic added to version 1.0.27X4627 affecting several machines related to industrialization. It must be properly mitigated, lest suffer the consequences of a polluted world.
There are 3 subtypes of pollution, all of which can be tracked with a monitor:
- Soot is most common, produced by fossil fuel burning and some other sources. It increases generic mob health and strength. At high enough levels, it becomes visible as smog.
- Poison harms unprotected entities at high enough levels, and is produced exclusively as the consequence from Spilling Fluids such as CO2 or various Oil products.
- Heavy metal comes from the combustion of leaded fuels. It also increases mob strength, but also harms them at high enough levels.
It can also be harmful to entities and players if they aren't wearing gas protection.
Sources
Values are multiplied with a standard baseline multiplier for each type.
- Soot: 1/25 per second
- Heavy metal: 1/50 per second
| Machine | Soot | Heavy Metal | Can Use Exhaust Pipes? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coker | 20/s | ||
| Flare Stack | 5/s | 5/s if leaded | |
| Refinery | 5/s, 70/s if on fire | ||
| Tank | 50/s if on fire | 50/s if on fire and leaded | |
| Combination Oven | 3/s | Yes | |
| Iron Furnace | 1/s | ||
| Steel Furnace | 2/s | ||
| Crucible | 0.5/s if filled | ||
| Blast Furnace | 1/s, 3/s if extended | Yes | |
| Rotary Furnace | 2.5/s | Yes | |
| Firebox | 3/s | Yes | |
| Fluid Burner | 0.025/s | 0.025/s if leaded | Yes |
| Wood-Burning Generator | 1/s | ||
| Industrial Combustion Engine | 0.025/s | 0.025/s if leaded | Yes |
| Diesel Generator | 0.025/s | 0.025/s if leaded | Yes |
| Oil Heater | 1/s | Yes | |
| Combined Cycle Gas Turbine | 0.25/s | ||
| Turbofan | 0.05/s | Yes | |
| Pyrolysis Oven | 10/s | Yes |
the Electric Arc Furnace produces 10 soot per operation and does not follow standard conventions for pollution, as what it emits is a single static impulse of pollution at the end of an operation and not spread throughout, it also cannot connect to exhaust pipes.
Pollution can also be generated by Spilling various Fluids via the Flare Stack or Drainage Pipe, though soot pollution cannot be produced via the Drainage Pipe and is only produced by the Flare Stack if ignited and not simply vented.
Mitigation
Compatible machines can be connected to special exhaust pipes, which are effectively specialized box-ducts, to output to a Smokestack or Industrial Smokestack to reduce the amount of pollution. Dead dirt can be restored to grass via spraying seeding slurry with a chemthrower
Mitigating pollution with a Smokestack on top of an Ashpit will produce Fly Ash, in addition to Fine Soot if an Industrial Smokestack is instead used.
Tips
The Combination Ovens pollution output is not dictated by processing speed nor recipe; as such an array of Combination ovens on top of Fireboxes processing whatever a player has on hand is a quick and dirty way to produce the Fine Soot required for a Pyrolysis Oven if a player has not been stockpiling fine soot by the time they're able to process it.
