Coal is a common, combustible, and black in color material present in the base game that is widely used in NTM. It is used as fuel (in furnaces, the blast furnace, and the firebox), as a source of carbon to produce steel, and to craft vanilla utilities such as torches, making coal a vital material in progression.
Production
Coal can be found naturally via mining coal ore, which can be found most abundantly in blobs of 0-37 blocks, from Y=5 to Y=52, though it generates until Y=128. Upon mining coal ore, gases (such as carbon dioxide and methane) will be released, and once the player is exposed, the emissions will cause poisoning.
Alternatively, charcoal can be made by smelting wood in a furnace, although it cannot always be used in the various purposes coal serves.
Coal Powder
Coal powder is the powder form of coal, which can be used to produce coal coke in a press. When a player is holding coal powder in their inventory, it has the Coal Dust effect, and when held long enough, will cause damage and coal dust poisoning. It can be produced by shredding coal.
Uses
As mentioned before, coal can be used to create torches. For effective storage, coal can be turned into compact coal blocks. It can also be used to create steel in a blast furnace or crucible as a carbon source.

Press
Coal powder can be used to create coal briquettes, which can be pressed into coal coke, which is used to make graphite.
