Stirling Engine
The stirling engine is a simple power generating machine that converts heat directly into energy with 50% efficiency. It also comes in a heavy and creative mode variant, both of which increases its maximum heat tolerance.

Usage
The stirling engine, due to its barebones recipe, might be considered as a useful power source in the early game. In order for it to function, an external heating source (such as a firebox or heating oven) must be placed directly underneath. The engine is prone to overspinning at relatively low heat levels of only 300 TU/t (producing 150 HE/t or 3 kHE/s); if it exceeds this limit, it will audibly warn of an overspeed before launching its main gear into the air — destroying blocks and killing entities in the process. The gear is retrievable once it lands.
Crafting
Both it and its heavy variant can be crafted in a tier 2 anvil:

Variants

The heavy stirling engine is an improved version, capable of handling five times the amount of thermal energy at 1500 TU/t. Only a few fuels, such as BF rocket fuel, are able to overspeed it.
There is also the creative mode stirling engine, which has no thermal limit whatsoever and operates at 100% efficiency. It is (obviously) unobtainable in survival and is purely meant for testing.
