The Benelli M4 Super 90 (or M1014 under US military designation) is a full automatic, 12 gauge, combat shotgun. It has been modified to use a drum magazine instead of its typical 8 round tube and to be full automatic. It has the ability to use iron sights.

Background

From Wikipedia:

The Benelli M4 is a semi-automatic shotgun produced by Italian firearm manufacturer Benelli Armi SpA, and the fourth and last model of the Benelli Super 90 line of semi-automatic shotguns. The M4 uses a proprietary action design called the "auto-regulating gas-operated" (ARGO) system, which was created specifically for the weapon. Designed in 1998, the M4 was adopted by the armed forces of Italy, the United States, and United Kingdom, among others, and has been used in a variety of conflicts.

Mechanics and Play

The M4 has a high capacity and fire rate at 240 RPM, which makes it quite devastating if used correctly. Pellets have a somewhat tight pattern, so they remain effective at medium range. However, it can be very effective in close quarters against lightly or unarmored targets, as the high fire rate can easily deal high damage.

The weapon is also controllable enough to only fire single shots or in bursts to conserve on ammo when needed. Most generic vanilla monsters can be killed in a single shot, even at medium range. Also of note, in Minecraft, there is a mechanic known as "invincibility frames", which means high rate of damage is not as effective as single hits or bursts, so don't mag dump unnecessarily. Use its fire rate to allow for quick successive shots only if necessary, such as when a mob isn't killed in one shot or if there are multiple.

It has the ability to use iron sights, which may assist in aiming, but it provides no tangible benefit.

It has a high durability of 250,000 and an estimated lifespan of 25,000 rounds, assuming only the default round is used and no maintenance at all occurs. This is an excellent lifespan for any gun. This allows it to be used for a significant duration without maintenance, even with heavy usage, making it very reliable.

Trivia

  • The model was made by UFFR, with detail work by Frooz.
  • The comment is both referencing how this weapon is both truly full automatic in-game and much more reliable in real life compared to the SPAS-12.
  • The lifespan of 25,000 rounds is taken from a report on the gun's real life testing, stating that it could: "reliably function for at least 25,000 rounds without replacement of any major parts."[1]
  • Initially, there were going to be two versions of the M4, one would've been with the normal 8 round tube magazine and the other would've been the upgraded version with the drum.
    • Bob dropped this idea as it would've been redundant, since there is no reason not to upgrade.
      • The code still exists in-game and is used, as the definition for the drum magazine version is simply copied from the original and slightly modified.
    • The model has not yet been updated to reflect the drum.
      • The model was eventually updated by Mellow when he upgraded its animations.
    • This concept and the gun itself was inspired by the autoshotgun in the DOOM mod Project Brutality 3, but used in the M4 instead of replicating the fictitious shotgun.
  • The model lacks the typical collapsible buttstock, as the reference model was actually a civilian model.
    • This is somewhat ironic, because the civilian version only has a 5 round tube.
  • Originally, the spent casing ejection was a part of the firing animation and model, until a system was setup to allow spent casings be a real entity in the world and allow all guns to be able to use them.
    • The code also references an unused "pump" animation during the reload cycle, despite the gun not being pump action whatsoever. This was simply an error on the original creator's part that was never removed. It is possible this was a leftover from the phase when it was the autoshotgun from PB3, which is a hybrid pump action/automatic and before the gun was changed to the M4 instead.
  • It was originally going to be semi-automatic, but it was quickly made full automatic after some play testing.
  • In the original pull request, it used newly added sounds to make it feel more satisfying to use, but the sounds were cut and ones for a pistol firing and a submachine gun reloading were used instead.
